Billy Gene Herd

Billy Gene Herd, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2017. He was born on April 14, 1933, in Coweta, Oklahoma, to Freeman and Lucille Herd. He married the love of his life, Nola Sewell, after a three month courtship on April 14, 1956. Three years later, they started their family together. He worked for the Cutler-Orosi Unified School District until his retirement in 1998. He was a simple man who enjoyed the company of his little buddy, Tiny, his dachshund. Some of his favorite pastimes included camping, working in his yard, and driving his tractor. He treasured spending time with his family which included playing card games on Saturday nights, family dinners, and attending his grandchildren's events. He is survived by his wife, Nola, his children, David Herd and wife Kathy, Kathy Huerta and husband Sam, Sandra Hernandez and husband Raul, six grandchildren, Sam, Chris, and Celeste Huerta, and Gary, Leslie, and Cheyenne Smith. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dopkins Funeral Chapel. Graveside service will be held at Smith Mountain Cemetery on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.
