

Gene Nelson, a lifelong advocate for the Veterans, died on June 16th. A devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gene was a Korean War Era Veteran. He was a proud member of the 31st and 508th Field Maintenance Squadron, Strategic Air Command and assisted in writing the WEMP Test of F-84F for the Air Force. Subsequently, he worked for Pan Am for over 30 years. Gene was a tireless volunteer for Northport VA, the USO at Kennedy Airport, as well as the Beacon House. He was a member of the JWVA Post 652, American Legion Post 94 and the VFW Post 516 and was a past President of the Long Island National Cemetery. He received widespread recognition and many awards for his dedication to our "Fallen Comrades.” Preceded in death by his wife Susan, of 56 years, he is survived by his daughters, Robin Weinbaum (Norman) of Staten Island, NY, Lisa Nelson-Cohen (Steve) of Paramus, NJ and Terri Nelson-Morolla of Deer Park, NY, grandchildren – Matthew, Stephanie, Anthony and Sam and great-grandson Issak.
