Howard Steven Legatt was born on November 13, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York, the second son of Herbert and Lilly Legatt. The family moved to Bayside, Queens when he was a young child, and he grew up in Queens. Howard (or “Howie”, as he preferred to be called) was an enthusiastic child. He loved dogs, swimming, Star Trek, and getting together with relatives. He attended public school and then the Summit School in Queens (a school for students with special needs), where he received a GED.
Howard continued to live with his parents and moved with them to Florida after their retirement. One of his favorite activities there was making ceramics in their community. He enjoyed socializing with new neighbors and with relatives who had also moved to Florida. After his mother grew ill and passed away in Florida, Howard and his father moved back to New York together, to a senior residence in Westchester County. After his father died, Howard moved to Tanglewood House, a group home for adults with developmental disabilities in Rockland County. At Tanglewood House, he was well-loved and cared for both by the staff and the other residents, who came regularly to visit him when he was in the hospital.
Howard passed away on June 22, 2026 after a short but severe illness. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his brother, Alan (and Elizabeth), nephews Michael (and Caroline) and Joel (and Aviva), and niece Rachel (and Will), and seven great-nephews and great nieces (Caleb, Eliana, ZE, Ezra, Jarron, Micah, and Sasha), all of whom love Howie very much.
