Vivian Schweiger, age 92, formerly of Smithtown, NY, passed away in her sleep on March 9, 2019 at the West Houston Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Houston, TX after a long illness. Her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jay Kraker, were with her when she passed.
She was born November 30, 1926 in Bronx, NY to the late Samuel and Lillian (Schmanic) Eikov. She spent much of her early life in Setauket, NY. During World War II, she spent time working as a clerk and messenger at the Miami Air Depot, Miami, FL. After the war, she briefly attended New York University, then trained as a medical laboratory technician, later supporting a small medical practice as receptionist, medical assistant and laboratory technician. She married the late Marvin Schweiger on October 15, 1950. She and Marvin were one of the founding members of Temple Beth Sholom in Smithtown, NY, where she was also a founding member of the Temple Sisterhood. During her daughter’s childhood, she served as a Girl Scout leader. Home and family were the driving factors in her life. She was a great wife and mother, an outstanding cook and had a great beautiful smile and laugh.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey M. Schweiger, of Alexandria, VA, a retired Naval Officer now working in the information technology industry, her daughter, Susan (Schweiger) Kraker, of Houston, TX, a former music therapist, her sister, Doris Hechtman, of Nesconset, NY, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be at the Wellwood Cemetery, 1400 Wellwood Ave, Wyandanch, NY on March 14, 2019.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
