Kay passed away unexpectedly on April 16, 2021. Kay was born to the late Donald and Wanda Shafer on February 26, 1949. Kay grew up in Wayland, Michigan where she graduated from Wayland Union High School and continued her education at Western Michigan (College) University. After graduating from WMU, she taught business classes at both Godwin High School and Kelloggsville High School. Kay's last teaching years were spent teaching alternative education for South Kent-Godwin Community Education. Kay so enjoyed teaching the high school completion classes for pregnant teens and business training classes for adults. Sadly, Kay had to retire earlier than planned from teaching due to Parkinson's disease.

Kay walked down her high school graduation aisle in 1967 and her wedding aisle in 1972 with the love of her life, Wayne Moore. Wayne and Kay just celebrated 49 years of marriage on March 3rd. Kay's family came first, and she especially lit up when she talked about her sons and grandchildren. Kay enjoyed sewing, baking, cooking, canning and her beautiful flower gardens. Kay will be remembered for her deep love for family and friends, her caring and giving spirit, and passion for teaching.

Left to cherish Kay's sweet memory are her beloved husband and caregiver, Wayne Moore; son, Michael Moore, and grandson, Wyatt Moore; son, Steven Moore (Karie), and granddaughter, Makayla Moore; siblings Karen Hendrick (Jerry), Don Shafer, Jr., Ronald Shafer (Judy), Douglas Shafer (Chris); sister-in-law, Renee Baareman (Tony); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at CrossWind Community Church, 1683 142nd Ave., Dorr, Michigan 49323. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at CrossWind Community Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Health Hauenstein Neurosciences - for Parkinson's research or Wayland Area Ambulance. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online

To Wayne and all of Kay's family. I'm so sorry to hear of Kay's passing. Although I haven't seen her often since school, I'm happy I had a chance to talk to her at a recent school reunion. Hoping your memories will give you peace, joy and laughter, now and in the future.

Uncle Wayne, Mike & Steve,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you deal with the unfortunate passing of Aunt Kay.
We hope you can find comfort in knowing that she’s been reunited in Heaven with Grandma and Grandpa Shafer and other family and friends that have gone before her.
Many fond memories of her will be shared over the next few days, but we will certainly keep her in our hearts and remember her often, forever.
May she rest in peace, another angel watching over us all. Peace be with you.

Wayne and family our thoughts, prayers, love, and comfort during this difficult time. Kay and I shared so many awesome memories and never will I forget her smile, laughter, and daily hello in the school halls. She was so caring of all the alternative and adult students and always encouraged them to reach their goals of high school graduation!! Love her so much and know she is now in a garden of forever blooming flowers and fruits.

My big sister was the most caring and giving person you would ever come across. Being that I was born the year she left for college I was always spoiled when she would come home on break or when she would sneak home unannounced bearing gifts for her baby brother. She has taught me many valuable life lessons and was always an understanding nonjudgmental ear when I needed to unload my baggage to someone. I’m sure she is enjoying the best ginger snap cookies (her favorite) with all of our family members and friends that greeted her when she entered Heaven. I will love and miss you always.
