Born in Denver, Colorado, Ruth was the daughter of Herman and Martha VanderLaan. Early in her life, her family relocated to Michigan, where she attended Grand Rapids Christian High School and later Calvin College. After earning her degree in education from Calvin, Ruth dedicated more than 30 years to teaching in the Grand Rapids Public Schools, touching the lives of countless students throughout her career.
In 1985, Ruth married the love of her life, Marvin, and together they shared 40 wonderful years of marriage. Ruth found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including gardening, reading, and spending time at the family cottage. She especially cherished being near the water, whether at Gun Lake or along the shores of Lake Michigan.
A lifelong learner and adventurer, Ruth enjoyed traveling with friends and explored many parts of the world, including Africa, Europe, and Israel. Above all, Ruth lived a life grounded in faith and was an active and devoted member of her church community.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; parents Herman and Martha VanderLaan; and siblings Julia, Jim, and Harold VanderLaan.
She is lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law, Judy VanderLaan; several nieces and nephews; stepchildren Julie (Brett) Shrontz, Mark Foote, and Keith (Allison) Foote; and grandchildren Kannon and Annika; along with many friends and loved ones whose lives she touched.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Legacies Assisted Living and Optimal Care Hospice for the compassionate care and support they provided during Ruth's final months.
