Thomas Duane Holtz Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by parents Duane Holtz and Charlotte (Bruce) Hall; brother, Keith (Renee) Holtz; his wife of nearly 46 years, Mary Holtz; children Thomas (Tara-Lee) Holtz Jr., Roger (Angela) Holtz, Kayla (Samuel) Schulz, Sarah (TJ) Brock; and 21 precious grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his stepmother, Lois Holtz, and mother- and father-in-law, Ralph and Frances Abair.
Tom was born in Toledo, OH, raised in Ottawa Lake, MI and graduated from Blissfield High School in 1977. Tom met Mary precariously on a wrong number when he was praying for a girlfriend, while she was simultaneously praying for a horse (which she also received!). They married in 1980 and moved to West Michigan where they started and raised their beloved family, which grew from four children to eight as they each married their own loves. His quiver was full, leaving a legacy of 21 grandchildren, all in whom he took great pride.
He was a skilled welder and painter and worked at Haven-Bush Company in Grand Rapids and then SP Industries in Hopkins for many years until his retirement in 2023. He was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Dorr where he heard the good news of Jesus Christ and enjoyed fellowship over weekly talks of fish and preparing the pig for the annual church picnic. Tom was a man of manifold joys and hobbies. In the summer, you could find him in his garden, watching his kids or grandkids playing ball, or out on a disc golf course. In the winter, you could find him out on Green Lake where he was something of a fishing legend. Tom will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humor, his love of family and his dogs, and his joy for music. He is already dearly missed.
A celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2026, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4125 18th St., Dorr, MI 49323. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.kubiakcookdorr.com in Tom’s online guestbook.
