
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wallace Russell officiating. Burial services for the family will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Born December 13, 1942, in Washington, D.C., John spent his childhood years in Washington and the Maryland suburbs. He was a member of the Boy Scouts – remaining one all of his life – generously helping others at every opportunity. He was also a member of the Order of DeMolay during his teen years and a true rock ‘n’ roll enthusiast. He moved to Dothan in 1960 on assignment at Fort Rucker for the U.S. Army, where he met his future wife, Jan Howell.
Following his service in the Army, John worked a variety of jobs in Dothan. He returned to school at Troy University where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Starting at Farley Nuclear Plant, John worked for Fluor Daniel at many nuclear plants throughout the country.
When his children were younger, John enjoyed camping and water skiing with his family. In his later years, he was an avid computer enthusiast, and enjoyed helping others with various projects. John was a Baptist by faith and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
John was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Ross Stiner; and his parents, John Anderson Ross, Sr. and Joan Boarman Ross.
John was married for 50 years to Jan Howell Ross of Dothan. He is survived by his sons: Steve Toby Ross (Tracey) and Christopher Todd Ross (Amy); grandchildren: Jared Paul Ross, Jake Christian Ross, Matthew Tyler Ross, Conner Briggs Ross, and Catherine Elise Ross; his beloved sisters: Janice Leigh Ross, Juanita Pearl Kursevich, and Judy Gladell Ross; his Uncle Bill and Aunt Marian Ross; a special son-in-law, Tracy Stiner; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
