Mrs. Bessie Joanne Estes, age 85, of Powder Springs, Georgia, passed away with grace and dignity on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. She was born on September 12, 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Tom and Gladys (Alexander) Miller. Mrs. Estes ran a child daycare out of her home for many years and really enjoyed watching after those babies. Over her lifetime, she cared for 87 children; two of which were her grandchildren. She had the patience of a saint and was the soft to her husband’s strong. Mr. and Mrs. Estes met when she was 16 years old and were married after she turned 18.
She loved to make people happy and wanted nothing but calm and peace. She didn’t like people fussing and arguing with one another. She was very wholesome and enjoyed wholesome shows and activities. Mrs. Estes treasured watching Little House on the Prairie and the Andy Griffith Show. She always told her family “this too shall pass.” She had a wonderful sense of humor and would tell the kids that she would put them across her red checkered apron, even though she didn’t actually have one until she was given one as a gift.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John Dee Estes and her siblings, Tommy Miller, Frankie Beatty, and Jimmy Miller.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia Estes, Sandra (Edward) Wilhoit, Steve Estes, Stanley Estes, and Cathy (RC) Brown; her sister, Alma Jean Prater; her grandchildren, Tracy, Josh, McKayla, and Summer; great-grandchildren, Katelynn, Devin, Justin, Ciera, and Wyatt; and numerous other loved ones, family, and friends.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, October 5, 2020 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm. The funeral service will follow in the Rosehaven Chapel at 2:00 pm with Chaplain Matthew Alexander officiating. Mrs. Estes will be laid to rest next to her husband at Sweetwater Memorial Park in Hiram, Georgia immediately following the service.
