

She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 3rd, 1929 to Zollie E. and Margaret Rowe McMichen. She was married for 65 years to the late Aubrey S. Porter. Bessie is survived by her four children: M. Angela Martin and her husband Dennis, of Douglasville, Charles M. Porter and his wife Dori of Athens, Kenneth E. Porter of Powder Springs, and Jeffrey L. Porter of Douglasville.
Bessie is also survived by six grandchildren: the late Key Martin of Maryville, Tennessee, Duane Martin of Algonquin, Illinois, Kerry Martin of Douglasville, Christopher Porter of Freeport, Florida, Meg Porter of Atlanta, and Jeffrey Porter of Athens, Georgia. She is survived by eleven great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Her siblings include James McMichen of Helen, Georgia, Janet McMichen Umphrey of Douglasville, David McMichen of Peachtree City, Georgia, and the late Jerry McMichen of Douglasville.
In addition to her role as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, Bessie earned her L.P.N. degree and worked throughout her life in the nursing field. She worked for many years at the medical office of the late Dr. Floyd W. Morgan in Douglasville, at Parkway Hospital, and later retired from Douglas General Hospital.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home, Rose Avenue, Douglasville. The funeral service will be held in the Rosehaven Chapel on Thursday, December 12th, 2019 at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow immediately at Sweetwater Memorial Park, Hiram-Douglasville Highway (Hwy 92).
