Robert “Calvin” Phillips, age 88, of Winston, Georgia passed away Thursday, September 28, 2023. He was born October 10, 1934 in Atlanta, Georgia. Calvin’s family moved to Douglas County when he and his siblings were children. Calvin was a 1952 graduate of Douglas County High School. He loved his Lord and Savior and had been a member of Ephesus Baptist Church since he was baptized there at the age of seven. He began teaching Sunday School around the age of 20. His love for the Lord was evident in Calvin’s life—as he lived a life of consideration and respect for all with whom he made acquaintance. Known for his thoughtfulness and tenderheartedness, Calvin would step out to help anyone at any time. Family was important to him—he was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a devoted sibling to his brother and sister. Calvin retired after a successful career with AT&T, spanning over 43.5 years. He later worked for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for 10 years, where he served as a Bailiff at the Douglas County Courthouse. While living in Ohio, Calvin was instrumental in the development and building of the Barnett Road Baptist Church, as well as the Dorsett Shoals Baptist Church upon his return to Douglas County. Calvin was also a member of the Lathem Masonic Lodge #12 for 67 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Amos and Jewell (Taylor) Phillips; sister, Betty Mae Waldrop; brother-in-law, J.E. Waldrop; and niece, Judy (Waldrop) Wilson.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of over 48 years, Sue Phillips; sons, Robert “Craig” Phillips (Kathie) and John Melchiori (Tammy); daughters, Jan Lanette Jordan and Debra Gibson; brother, Taylor Phillips (Betty Jean); seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as many other extended family members and a host of friends.
