Charles Harrington, age 77, of Lithia Springs, Georgia died Saturday, September 21, 2024. He was born November 15, 1946 in Columbus, Georgia. He was a graduate of Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus and attended Columbus College for one year. Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Okinawa and Vietnam. Upon his return to the states, he attended Georgia State University, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in history. In February of 1972, he married the love of his life, Angela Edwards. His daughter was born a year and a half after he graduated GSU. After working many years with Olympic Manufacturing and Serrmi Products LLC, he concluded his working career in 2009, retiring from Douglasville Ace Hardware. Charles was a simple man, but he did enjoy traveling to many places, including Egypt and the Galápagos Islands. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, coin collecting and occasionally playing slot machines at casinos. Charles was a history buff, as well as an ancestry enthusiast. He would spend two to three hours everyday working on ancestry. One of his ancestors, Sir John Harrington, godson of Elizabeth I, is credited for inventing the first flush toilet for the royal family in 1592. Charles also wrote a letter to the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser and copied it to President John Kennedy. President Abdel-Nasser was moving a structure, Abu-Simbel, brick-by-brick and Charles was concerned about historical accuracy. He received a personal response and, later, a Christmas card from President Nasser.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Donald G. and Mary Elizabeth (Freeman) Harrington.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 52 years, Angela (Edwards) Harrington; daughter, Julie Renee Murphy; one grandchild, Haylie Kyla Murphy; sister-in-law, Rita Echols; two nieces and a nephew; as well as a host of friends.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM in the Rosehaven Chapel. Following the service, Charles will be laid to rest at Rosehaven Memorial Park.
