Gail Ann Brumby Wray, born June 29, 1950, in Marietta, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home in Douglasville on March 16th, 2026 after a period of declining health. Daughter of the late William Edward Brumby and Helen Milburn Brumby, Gail leaves behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and service to her family, students, and community.
Gail enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up in Marietta. Her Talcott Circle home was a gathering place filled with parties, luncheons, bridge clubs, and lifelong friendships. She fondly remembered walking to her father’s furniture store on the town square and riding along for deliveries.
She graduated from Marietta High School in 1968, the same year the Marietta Blue Devils football team won the state championship—an achievement celebrated again at her 50th class reunion, which she enjoyed greatly.
A 1972 graduate of Georgia College in Milledgeville, Gail began her career in education teaching in Perry, Georgia. She moved to Douglasville in 1984 and spent the remainder of her career with the Douglas County School System, teaching social studies and language arts at Chapel Hill Middle School. Gail was deeply committed to her students and believed wholeheartedly in the power of education. She created lasting memories by taking students to performances at the Alliance Theatre and by standing in midnight lines at Borders Books to secure the latest Harry Potter releases—experiences her students cherished.
Following her retirement in 2009, Gail enjoyed traveling and spending meaningful time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
A devoted and longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville, Gail faithfully served in the Wedding Guild, Christian Education and Vacation Bible School. She treasured her Sunday School class, ladies’ Bible studies, and the many friendships she built within her church community.
Gail was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Cathryn (Ben) Martin of Buford; her son, Jonathan Wray of Palmetto; and her cherished grandchildren, Sara Kate Martin and Thomas W. Martin of Buford. She is also survived by her brother, Andrew M. Brumby of Windermere, Florida; her nephew, Benjamin (Amanda) Brumby of Orlando, Florida; her niece, Adrian (Calvin) Schellbach of Oakland, Florida; her great-niece, Shea Schellbach; her great-nephews, Will and Nate Brumby; as well as numerous cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle, Ann and Thomas Holmes.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her dedicated home health team whose compassionate care allowed Gail to remain in the comfort of her home.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home in Douglasville. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM with Dr. James Harper officiating.
