July 1, 2000 - June 21, 2025
Gary Devonte Mariner was born on July 1, 2000, in Queens, New York, and peacefully transitioned from this world on June 21, 2025, in Douglasville, Georgia.. He was 24 years old.
Known lovingly as "Devonte" by his family and childhood friends, and as "Gary" to his closest companions, he was a soul of rare depth—artistic, considerate, and fiercely independent. His father often introduced him with pride as his "Man Child," a fitting tribute to Gary's towering presence at 6 feet tall and his gentle strength of character. Gary possessed a vast heart, a brilliant mind, and a spirit that was both gentle and unshakable. He was a natural protector of the vulnerable and a light in the darkness, often saying little but speaking volumes through his thoughtful actions.
A Life Rooted in Love
Though born in Queens, New York, Gary began his education at P.S. 138 in Rosedale, NY, while living with his mother. In 2014, he moved to Marietta, Georgia, to live with his father, Gary L. Mariner II, and stepmother, Sharene Mariner (whom he referred to as “Mrs. Mom”), alongside his younger brother, Andre Taylor Mariner. Gary excelled academically in Georgia, graduating from Marietta High School a full year ahead of his class, demonstrating the determination and focus that would define his approach to life.
Gary’s family extended far beyond his Georgia home. He is survived by his father, Gary L. Mariner II, his stepmother, Sharene Mariner, and his beloved younger brothers Jacob Princeton Mariner and Andre Taylor Mariner. He is also survived by his mother, Joyce J. Washington, and his siblings through her: Chazz N. Donald, Bishop N. Donald, Zadé Z. Donald, and Prestige N. Donald.
Gary’s extended family formed a powerful and loving foundation that lifted him throughout his life. He was deeply cherished by his grandparents: Marsha L. Washington-Marks, Joseph W. Ray Jr., Kevin Marks, Kelly Jefferson, Gary L. Mariner Sr., Joyce Mariner, Calvin Patterson, and Gwendolyn Patterson, as well as his great-grandparents: Ann Mariner, Joyce Washington, and Elbert Washington.
His roots ran deep within a family tree full of strength and pride. Gary was a source of immense joy to his many cousins, including Alexis and Martine Chisholm, India, Candace and Mark Foxworth Jr., Caroline Foxworth and Mark Foxworth Sr., Michelle, Patricia, and Malik Lesane. He was loved dearly by his uncle Calvin Patterson II, uncle Salim S. Washington, great uncle Elbert D. Washington III, aunts Talia T. Marks and Keyahna K. Marks, and a host of other aunts, uncles, and extended family members who will continue to honor his light.
A Creative Spirit and Determined Mind
From an early age, Gary displayed an undeniable gift for creativity and artistic expression. He was passionate about gaming, anime, art, and cosmetology—drawn to the beauty industry because he wanted to make people happy and help them feel their best. In recent years, he had developed a quiet devotion to plants. Though naturally reserved, he was deeply expressive through his creations—always meticulous, always intentional, and always meaningful.
He carried this same drive to Full Sail University, where he completed his Bachelor's degree in Game Design one year ahead of schedule. Gary was relentlessly determined and focused on progress, often joking with his characteristic humor, "I'm not about to be 25 still living at home," and worked tirelessly each day to fulfill that vision. His ambition was matched only by his profound humility.
A Legacy of Quiet Strength
Those who knew Gary intimately will remember a young man who radiated strength without fanfare, who offered kindness without condition, and who never hesitated to defend what was right. His presence made others feel safe, understood, and deeply loved. He was our first light in this world, and he remains, forever, ours.
Gary Devonte Mariner will be remembered not just for the life he lived, but for the love he gave—quietly, fiercely, and without fail. His memory will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him most.
