

Mr. Herbert Harold Rogers, of Douglasville, GA passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary William Rogers after 59 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughters Shirley Rogers Rawlins and Louis Rawlins, Jr., and Linda Rogers Urheim; grandchildren Todd and Robin Urheim, Kelly and Trey Robinson, and Libby Rawlins; great-grandchildren, Kira, Copelan, Lian, and Grey Urheim and Drew and Brady Robinson. He is also survived by Sisters Hazel McCarter and Zellie Snyder of Woodruff, SC, and a number of nephews and nieces and their children in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Herbert was the third of six children born to Daniel Newport Rogers and Laura Boiter Rogers in the Switzer community of Spartanburg County, S.C. After graduating from Woodruff High School, he worked at the Woodruff Depository and as a bookkeeper for Band and White, Spartanburg, S.C. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy in World War II serving with the 15th Navy Seabees in the South Pacific. After 20 months with the Seabees, he entered the Navy’s V12 Officer Training Program at Dartmouth College and the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in the Naval Science and Engineering Program. He was commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve (inactive duty) and served two years.
Herbert received his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering from the University of North Carolina. After graduation, he received a Commission in the U.S. Public Health Service and served 18 years. Upon retiring from the U.S. Public Health Service and served 18 years. Upon retiring from the U.S. Public Health Service, he became Chief of the Environmental Resources Planning Branch, South Atlantic Division, Army Corps of Engineers from 1966-1971. He was an Environmental Engineering Consultant for an additional ten years for the Army Corps of Engineers and engineering firms in Georgia.
He was active for many years in his faith community at the Pray’s Mill Baptist Church and the Dorsett Shoals Baptist Church in Douglasville where he served as a Deacon, an usher, and on various church planning committees through the years. He also has served on the WSA (Water and Sewer Authority) Board of Douglas County.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the Rosehaven Chapel with Dr. Kevin Maples of Dorsett Shoals Baptist Church and Reverend Tom Kaplan officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehaven Memorial Park.
