John was born on January 19, 1962, in Paterson, New Jersey, to Joseph and Jessie (Hill) Mauthe. He was married on May 13, 1994, to Carol (Tipton) Mauthe.
John lived a life defined by hard work, generosity, and devotion to the people he loved. A master carpenter for more than 45 years, he took tremendous pride in his craftmanship and the many lives and homes he touched through his work. His natural mechanical ability gave him the skill to build or repair anything. During his years in Georgia, John served proudly as a volunteer firefighter with the Paulding County Fire Rescue, always willing to help others in times of need. John was known as the kind of man who would give the shirt off his back or the shoes off his feet to a stranger. His kindness, loyalty, and big heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Outside of work, John loved fishing, hunting and watching football. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants and could often be heard cheering, “Go GMen!” John always wanted to be sure no one ever went hungry at his table and never missed an opportunity to say, “Gotta eat!”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Jessie Mauthe; his parents-in-law, John and Virginia Tipton; sisters-in-law, Melodie Mauthe and Laurie Mauthe; and godson, Derek Rock.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Mauthe; his sons, Brian Mauthe and wife, Heather and Joseph Mauthe and wife, Tiphanie; brothers, Joseph (Melody), Jeffrey Mauthe and Jay Mauthe; sister, Janet (Jeff) Chamberlain; many nieces and nephews; goddaughters Jennifer Floyd and Kamryn Bleakley; and godson, Jay Stallons.
John also built an extended family though love and is survived by his oldest friend, Terry Mayton; honorary daughters, Melissa Mayton and Alicia Marshall; honorary son, Aaron Pogue; honorary sisters, Lisa Major and Carla McGuire; honorary granddaughter, Allison Marshall; and grandson, Lucas (both of whom Papa John loved greatly).
John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His memory will live on through the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
A graveside service will take place at Peaceful Meadows Memorial Cemetery in Dallas, GA on Saturday June 6, 2026, at 1 PM.
