Mr. L. Clyde Carmichael, age 89, of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 after a brief illness. He was born on May 21, 1929 in Meridian, Mississippi, one of three children of the late Leon Carmichael and the late Ada Carmichael.
Clyde’s family moved to Atlanta when he was seven years old. He attended Atlanta Public Schools, graduating from the last class of Atlanta Boys High in 1947. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1951, and obtained a graduate degree from Emory in 1962.
Clyde married Sara Banks Carmichael in 1955 and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on August 27, 2018.
He served the church faithfully and was ordained as a deacon in 1951 at age 22. Clyde served as a deacon for 67 years in three churches – Capitol Avenue Baptist Church in Atlanta, Dogwood Hills Baptist Church in East Point, and First Baptist Church of Douglasville.
Clyde began his career in education in 1951 in the Atlanta Public Schools, where he taught English for 17 years. The remainder of his career was in Douglas County, where he worked as the Guidance Department Chairman for 21 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Darrell Carmichael.
Clyde is survived by his cherished wife, Sara Banks Carmichael; daughter, Julie Teal and husband, Michael; son, Neil Carmichael; grandchildren, Andrew Teal, Adrienne Teal, and Alex Teal; sister, Eloise Carmichael; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home, Douglasville, Georgia. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Douglasville with Dr. John Pennington officiating. Interment will follow the service at Macedonia Memorial Park in Canton, Georgia. Serving as pallbearers will be Gregg Cole, Lemoyne Dobbs, Guy Ellis, Tommy Harper, Doyle Ledbetter, and Johnny Miller.
