Luther proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Guantanamo Bay as a firefighter during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He carried the discipline and resilience of his military years throughout his life.
A devoted public servant, Luther spent over 30 years as a firefighter for the City of Atlanta, bravely protecting his community. Following his retirement, his passion for craftsmanship and hard work led him to start a painting company with a fellow firefighter—extending his commitment to service in a new form. Built entirely through word of mouth, the business grew into a local success—known for its high-quality work and Luther’s reliable, detail-oriented approach.
He was a man of many talents and interests. An avid fisherman, Luther especially cherished trips to Louisiana waters. At home, he found joy in tending to his vegetable garden and keeping a perfectly manicured lawn which was a reflection of his eye for detail. His skill as a carpenter was evident in the furniture he built and in the screened-in porch, deck, and extra room he crafted by hand in his own home. A true perfectionist, Luther approached every project with pride and precision.
For many years, he bowled in a local league, earning several trophies and forming friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Luther will be remembered for his steady strength, his dedication to craft and service, and the quiet joy he found in life’s simple pleasures.
Luther is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sherry Donehoo; his daughter, Tara Donehoo; grandson, Zachary Barton Smith; brother, Phillip Briggs; sister-in-law, Jackie Dillard and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Sanders and son-in-law, David Smith.
A Celebration of Luther’s life will be held at Whitley Garner Funeral Home Saturday, July 26 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Whitley Garner at Rosehaven is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements of Luther Barton Donehoo, Jr.
