Mrs. Mary Madeline B. Porterfield went to be with The Lord Wednesday, March 20, 2019. She had recently celebrated her 90th Birthday February 10th (1929). She was an Atlanta native; she also lived in Smyrna, and then Douglasville. She worked as an administrative secretary with Standard Oil Company and Rich’s Cobb Center for 25 years. Following her dreams of owning her own business, she created and was co-owner of The M & M Station of Wicker in the Dickson Shopping Center in Smyrna, GA until she retired. During her working years, she received numerous awards for outstanding work. She was President of The American Business Women’s Association for 5 years and was awarded the ABWA Woman of the Year. Mrs. Porterfield was a faithful member of The First Baptist Church of Douglasville for 30 years. She met the handsome Merchant Marine, Jim Porterfield (James Carlton Porterfield), whom she married November 9, 1946 and were married until his death in 2014. They were always the best jitterbug couple on any dance floor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Delves Wade Black and Nobie Lee Brock Black; her husband, James Carlton Porterfield; her only son, James Michael Porterfield, and her siblings Shirley Ann and Jimmy (both died as young children).
Mrs. Porterfield is survived by her only daughter, Olivia P. Kimmeth (Dennis); granddaughter, Shelbie M. Radom (Dan) and grandson, Brandon Moore (Leslie C.); daughter-in-law, Marilyn A. Porterfield (J. Michael, deceased); granddaughters, Olivia P. Proffitt (Jason), Lydia P. Goodson (Shannon); 12 great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Madeline, Hunter (deceased), Joshua Bershinsky (deceased), Sammie and Bailey Radom, Kelsey and Kacy Proffitt, Casin, Payton, Allie, and Emma Pearl Goodson; her only great-great granddaughter, Ayria Radom. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, one uncle, and many friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 24, 2019 from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Whitley Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM in the Rosehaven Chapel with Dr. John Pennington and Rev. Michael Kimberly officiating. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM at Rosehaven Cemetery. The pallbearers are listed as follows: Dennis Kimmeth, Brandon Moore, Jason Proffitt, Shannon Goodson, Terry Ennis, and Todd Eldredge.
Flowers will be accepted or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to 3Hopeful Hearts non-profit organization in Fort Collins, CO in honor of her granddaughter Shelbie Radom who lost two sons, or to The American Cancer Society https://donate3.cancer.org/ (Madeline was a breast cancer survivor and her son, Michael, passed away from cancer.)
