Maurice “Gene” Prewett, age 86, of Douglasville, passed away on January 29, 2026. Born in Atlanta, he attended West Fulton High School and spent his life rooted in hard work, family, and enjoyment of the world around him.
He was the owner of a BP service station in Mableton, as well as an Amoco station in Douglasville, and eventually opened and owned Prewett Auto Sales. He truly loved his work and the people he met through it. After long days at the garage, he could often be found playing poker with friends, sharing laughter and stories.
Known as the life of the party, Gene was always full of humor and joy. He had a deep love for adventure and the outdoors, enjoying boating, deep-sea fishing, golfing, flying airplanes, and riding motorcycles. These passions reflected his free spirit and enthusiasm for living life to the fullest.
Above all, he loved his family and was devoted to providing for them. Even after suffering a stroke three years ago, he faced life with resilience and grace, continuing to make the best of every day and inspiring those around him with his positive outlook.
He will be remembered for his laughter, generosity, strong work ethic, and the warmth he brought into every room. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Virgilynne Prewett; daughters, Christy (Roger) Holcomb, Allison Beckler (Duane), and Michelle (Terry) Queen; siblings, Barbara Brown, Vivian Kelley, and Janet (Tommy) Medlock; grandchildren, Katie Toomey, Andrew Jarriel, Garrett Hayes, Julia Prewett, Hayley Houser, Maggie Hayes, Jordan Holcomb, and Zoe Holcomb; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Prewett; and siblings, Joan Station, Harvey (Delores) Prewett, and Jeanelle (Stan) Anderson.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Whitley Garner Funeral Home. Services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 12:00 p.m., followed by interment at Rosehaven Memorial Park. Whitley Garner at Rosehaven is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements of Mr. Gene Prewett.
