Carolyn graduated from Duluth High School in 1948, and she attended secretarial school and some college at Georgia State University (then known as Georgia State College). She worked as a bookkeeper and a secretary for various companies, including GE and Arrow. She was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed sharing time with family and friends, and if you were looking for her, you could find her working in the yard, weeding her flower beds, even on the hottest days. In fact, when she retired, she joined three garden clubs, and she won a national prize for her cross-pollinated purple Iris. She loved cooking for her family and friends, especially for any holiday or potluck. She often brought several dishes to a single event, and everyone loved her chocolate cake baked from scratch, even the chocolate icing.
Surviving are her daughter, Teresa Hart of Lawrenceville, GA; son, Keith (Jaye) Atkinson of Alpharetta, GA; two granddaughters, Robin and Rose; her sister, Mary Brooks, of Roswell, GA; several nieces and nephews (Elaine, Ronald, Diane, Darlene, Wanda, and Doug), and even more great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Atkinson; three siblings (Frank, Nell, and Maurice), her parents, her son-in-law, Ray Hart, and her niece, Tammy Bivens.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Beulah Church, Douglasville, GA, at 11am, followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carolyn’s name to Beulah Church (directed toward youth or mission programs).
Whitley Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the services of Sarah Carolyn Atkinson.
