Tom and Sunshine were the best neighbors you could ask for.  My husband Bob and I always enjoyed chatting with them in a "across the fence" conversation when the opportunity presented itself.  Tom and I developed a deeper friendship of comfort and care  after both Sunshine and my Bob went home to Jesus.   Our telephone conversations always ended with a prayer.  Tom would say "Can I pray with you?"  He had the most beautiful prayers always ending with..."in the name of Jesus, the sweetest name I know."  His strong faith and knowledge of the Bible helped me through a dark time.  We talked about the beauty of Heaven and I know he is there now sitting at the feet of Jesus with all the glory and beauty of Heaven around him.   Remembering him in Christ's Love - Cathy

Saddened to read of my 1st Cousin Tom’s death! May He Rest In Peace! Sincere Condolences to His Family & Friends!  ✝️   …(Tom&Steve & My Brother Don&I were 2 sets of Manwell twins in the Mayville High School. Class of 73’)

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.  Brother Manwell was a very good man. I used to enjoy talking with him when he  came to Mt. Zion Baptist.  


Much of the time I spent with my father included movies (A Bug's Life, Charade (1963), Galaxy Quest), music (Yanni, Enya, David Lanz), and jokes. I'll tell you one of his (about cowboys, which my father adored, and an exasperated mom and a young son with no filter) as I remember it:

A family relocates to "cowboy country." The mother takes her son to the supermarket  to buy groceries for the first time in their new town.  As they enter the store, a cowboy walks out, tipping his hat.

The son goes wide-eyed and hisses, "Mom!  Did you see that bowlegged cowboy?"

"Don't call him that," the mother scolds. "That's not nice."

They pull out a cart and begin shopping.  When they pass the butcher's counter, the son points. "Mom! Mom! Lookit that bowlegged cowboy!"

"Hey, now! I told you that's rude! I'm not going to tell you again."

Another man swaggers out of the bread aisle, his knees turned out.

"What a bowlegged cowboy!" the boy cries.

His mother has had enough.  "That's it.  If I hear you say that one more time, you'll be doing nothing but reading Shakespeare for two weeks straight!"

"Sorry, Mom," the boy mumbles.

They continue shopping as one cowboy after another tromps by and they get all the way to the checkout when a fellow enters the store walking so bowlegged that if you put him next to a knock-kneed lady, they'd spell "ox."

"Now that is one bow-legged cowboy!" the boy blurts.

"OK, mister," his mother says, "as soon as we get home, you're cracking open the Shakespeare!"

That's exactly what happens. For two weeks, he does nothing but eat, sleep, and read Shakespeare.  At the end of the two weeks, the mother decides to take him shopping with her again.  As they meander through the store, a cowboy who is (you guessed it) quite bowlegged strolls by.

The son turns to his mother and says, "Hark, Mother! What manner of men are these that wear their legs in parentheses?"

The end.
