

He was born on August 16, 1916, on the John Lyons homestead, DuBois. He was the fourth child of Charles Roy Lyons and Lela Dunlap Lyons.
He was a graduate of Sandy High in 1934. He enlisted with the U.S. Navy in 1939. He served in the Atlantic Theatre on the USS Constellation, the Atlantic/Pacific Theatre on the USS Yorktown 1940-1942 and earned rank of Gunners mate. He was at the battle of the Coral Sea and Midway where the Yorktown sank. His next ship was the USS Tryon on which he earned the rank of Chief Gunners Mate. He was honorably discharged on September 19, 1945.
On August 7, 1942, he married Ila Ethel Perrin. They worked side by side on their dairy farm for about 20 years. Then he was a general contractor mostly in the roofing business until retirement at the age of 76.
His hobbies were hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, challenging games and wood working. He was a former member of the Warsaw Township Vol. Fire Co. and Warsaw Sportsman Club, long standing member of the NRA, member of the American Legion post # 0392 and VFW post 813 of DuBois.
He was a member of the Kirkman Independent Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila, on June 13, 2012, just shy of their 70th wedding anniversary. Also preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Martin Lyons and one infant great-grandson Jack Thomas Whelpley, two brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by his children: Suzanne (Alan) Whelpley of Elizabethtown, William (Carol) Lyons of Hazen, Jerry (Frances) Lyons of Port Allegany and Kathy Lyons of Brookville; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren, a brother Leonard L. Lyons of Keystone Heights, FL and two sisters: Marie Kopshina of DuBois and Betty (Donald) Wingert of Luthersburg.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, October 25, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Mohney Yargar Funeral Chapel, Inc in DuBois. An additional hour of viewing will be held on Friday from 11am until the hour of service.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 26 at 12:00pm at the Mohney Yargar Funeral Chapel, Inc. with Pastor Warren Harris officiating. Burial service will be at Temple Cemetery, Hazen, PA. Full military honors will be accorded by the VFW Post #813 Honor Guard.
