
He was born on May 29, 1923 in Luthersburg, the son of the late William and Mabel (Lines) Shaffer.
On October 25, 1947 he married Vera (Delp) Shaffer, who passed away on September 17, 2005.
Elmer served in the Army Air Force during WWII, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and American Theater Ribbon.
He worked in the coal stripping industry for twenty years and the piper aircraft for sixteen years.
Elmer was a lifetime member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee at the church.
He enjoyed shopping for cars, aircraft, fishing trips to Alaska, but above all he was a devoted husband and family man.
Elmer is survived by his two children: George Shaffer DMD and his wife Anna of Ketchikan, Alaska and Gail and her husband Vernon Reitz of Bellefonte; four grandchildren: Karta Shaffer-Thigpen (Joshua), Reid (Kimberly) Shaffer, Craig Reitz and Megan (Kenneth) Platt; six great grandchildren: James and Emily Thigpen, Hannah and Aaron Reitz, Parker and Esslee Platt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers: Lamar, Clair and Charles Shaffer.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Howe officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 6:00-8:00pm on Monday, May 9, at the Mohney-Yargar Funeral Chapel, Inc.
