
DIAZ, Gonzalo passed away on February 27th at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, Georgia. He was 93 years old. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Dolores Menendez, and sisters, Emilia Anel and Deltina Fernandez. He is survived by his three children Margaret Diaz (Terry Zitek ) of Tampa FL, Richard Diaz (Ronda) of Perry GA, Sylvia Diaz (Raul Morales) of Miami FL, seven grandchildren, Emily Zitek, Tony Zitek, Lori Dunn, Lindsey Diaz, Lydia Diaz, Nicholas Morales, Christian Morales, one great grandson, Bryce Dunn, and many nieces and nephews. Having parents who immigrated from Spain, Gonzalo and his sisters were the first American generation of his family. He was born April 25, 1918 and raised in West Tampa where he attended Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary School and Hillsborough High School. He served in WWII as a flight engineer in the Army Air Corps. Following the war, he accepted a job with Eastern Airlines in Miami where he lived and worked for over 35 years. Following retirement, he returned to his home of Tampa in 1984. He was a strong proponent of the value of education and was very proud of the educational achievements of his children, grandchildren and relatives. A graveside service will be held at Centro Asturiano Memorial Park at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 3rd. The family will receive friends immediately following the burial at 2510 W. Jetton Ave in Tampa. For those wishing to contribute to a charitable organization in his memory, donations may be made to USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute.
