Charlotte was born on July 26, 1946 to Gilford and Gwendolyn Shrader in Newark, Ohio. She was an honor roll student who played oboe in the Newark High School band and was a member of the school choir. After graduating from Newark High School in 1964 she attended The Ohio State University on academic/music scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1968. While at OSU, she became a member of Zeta Tau Alpha women’s fraternity and was selected for membership in Delta Omicron, a national music honorary. After university, she began her career in music education, which over the course of her career included public school districts in Columbus, Ohio; Highland Park, Michigan; and Chinook, Montana.
In 1974, Charlotte married Lyle Robert Schroeder, a fellow educator. They moved to Laramie, Wyoming in 1977, where Lyle began working as a professor at the University of Wyoming. Charlotte obtained a Master’s Degree in Vocational Education from the University of Wyoming in 1983. In 1984, they moved to Havre, Montana. She taught vocal music in the school district in the nearby town of Chinook for many years. After Lyle’s sudden passing in 1991, Charlotte returned to Ohio and Columbus Public Schools, teaching choral music at Ecole Kenwood French Immersion School and Buckeye Middle School.
She was an excellent choral music teacher who touched the lives of countless students. She strove to build strong music programs in her districts of employment over her many years as an educator. She spent her last few years prior to retirement with Columbus Public Schools as a teacher mentor in the Peer Assistance and Review program (PAR), where she applied her years of experience and skill to help other teachers reach their greater potential. After retirement from her career in education, she worked at McConnell Heart Health Center in Columbus, Ohio for several years.
Charlotte was active in her community as a member of several organizations. She served as president of the Gem City Lioness Club in Laramie, held office in Eastern Star, and was a guardian and music director with Job’s Daughters, to name a few. She was also a member of several professional organizations, including multiple state educators’ associations, the National Education Association, multiple music education associations, and Phi Delta Kappa.
Charlotte enjoyed sharing stories, and was passionate about dogs, of which she had four over the course of her life. She was also a proud fan of both the Ohio State Buckeyes and TBDBITL. She enjoyed watching the televised games and halftime band performances with her grandchildren.
Charlotte was predeceased by her parents, Gilford and Gwendolyn Shrader; her husband, Lyle R. Schroeder; her sister, Jayne Molnar; and her brother, Mark Shrader.
