On Thursday, September 21, 2023, we lost our father, Jae Boo Suk. He was 91 years old and as one could imagine, experienced so many extraordinary triumphs and tragedies that make our lives seem so trivial. He was born on January 5, 1932, while Korea was a colony of Japan. Upon the Japanese surrender after WWII, Dad fled to the south with two of his brothers and his parents, but one brother and two sisters stayed behind in the north to take their chances. That would be the last time he would see or hear from those siblings ever again. He lived through the Korean War, attended the prestigious Kyunggi High School, and was appointed to the Korea Maritime University where he received his BS in Nautical Engineering. After fulfilling his obligations to his country, he was one of the first waves of Koreans to attend university in the United States and received his BS Economics from the University of Dayton. In March 1964, he was married to our mother, So Ja Kim in Seoul, South Korea. They would move to East Lansing, Michigan since Dad was accepted to attend the College of Business at Michigan State University to pursue his MBA. However, only a few months after arriving in East Lansing, he would be faced with yet another obstacle when doctors discovered that a tumor in his lower left leg had grown back after trying to remove it several years prior while attending Dayton. Since there was no such thing as chemotherapy or radiation at that time, the decision was made to amputate his left leg above the knee. Despite all the challenges, Dad’s unrelenting drive and discipline resulted in a legacy of successful business ventures and was always working, even during the morning before heading to the hospital a few weeks ago. After our mom died in 2017, he decided to move to New York City to be closer to his older son’s family and spent over four years being a New Yorker. He is survived by his sons, Bill and John as well as his daughters-in-law, Sandra and Helen. He was so proud of his six grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia and Louisa in New York and Sam, Matthew and Jack in Seattle. Rest in peace Dad and hope you are enjoying being reunited with Mom again. Thank you for everything you did for your family, because we know your love for us was the driving factor for everything you did.
