Janet Veatch, age 82, passed away on June 23, 2023. She was born on February 15, 1941 to the late Karl and Edna Ina Erna (Reinholtz) Troeglen who emigrated to America from Germany. Janet attended Liberty High School and William Jewel College. In college, she was a member of the sorority Delta Zeta. Janet graduated with a degree in nursing from Trinity in North Kansas City. After graduation, she became a Registered Nurse and held leadership roles at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri and Children’s Mercy Hospital, and was a charge nurse for open heart surgery at the University of Missouri. On January 24, 1964 she married Ronald I. Veatch at Raytown Baptist Church. They were the last couple to be married in the church’s old chapel. Upon moving to Akron City Hospital, with Husband Ronald I Veatch, MD, she became their In-Service Nursing Education Director.
Ron gave Jan a PHT award, the “put hubby through med school” award, because without Jan and her sacrifices, Ron would not have been able to make it through medical school. She took a break from her Nursing career to raise her two kids, Christina Joy Veatch & Ronald Scott Veatch. She went back to Nursing after moving to Steubenville Ohio with family. She served as a Home Health Nurse, then a Hospice Nurse, and continued serving as a Hospice Volunteer Coordinator at Trinity Medical Center. Her final service in care of the dying was to serve as a Pastoral Care prayer volunteer and coordinated memorials for Hospice.
Her whole life was truly in service to others. She thrived on bringing faith, hope, and love to everyone around her. Her life lifted up so many, including her own family. She was completely present and involved in her family life. During her years in Carmel, Indiana raising her kids, she served in leadership at her Church, Hope Church Missionary Alliance. She served as the Director of Pioneer Clubs and Awana Sparks. She coordinated the Cub Scouts activities for her son. Then, in Steubenville Ohio, she served as prayer coordinator at Faith EPC Church. Janet had many hobbies from knitting clothes to driving a boat for her family to water ski, as well as water skiing herself. She also enjoyed cross country skiing and snowshoeing, and loved to fish. Janet has had many pets in her life, her favorite was a Cocker Spaniel named Queeny. She remembered spending the last days with her dog. She had such a way to comfort the hurting, even as a child. She also had many special cats that brought her family joy. After her kids were grown and had their own families, she was the Granny Nanny for Christina’s daughter Alexis, and also helped Scott often with his kids. Janet and Ron spent many years traveling and enjoying their retirement, including a big trip to Alaska where she caught salmon so large they mounted one on the wall.
They lived in Steubenville until this last year, when Janet’s health needed more attention. It was then that they were able to find Janet a new home at The Ganzhorn Suites in Powell, Ohio. In this last year at Ganzhorn, Janet and Ron enjoyed quality time together every day. These last months allowed them to add precious moments to their love story of more than 59 years! Jan and Ron truly showed everyone they were perfect companions. They loved each other as their “one and only” those many years, and it was the daily kisses on Janet’s forehead from Ron that brought her smiles more than anything in this last year.
Janet is survived by her husband Ronald I. Veatch M.D; daughter Christina (Kent) Walz; granddaughter Alexis Walz; son Scott (Danette) Veatch; grandchildren Jonathon, Zadok, Daniel, Sol and Harmony Veatch. She is preceded in death by her parents, and older brothers Robert and James.
Visitation will be held at Schoedinger Dublin; 5980 Perimeter Drive Dublin, Ohio 43017 on Saturday July 1, 2023 at 1pm. A service will immediately follow at 2pm and will be livestreamed at www.schoedinger.com.
Ron thanks the Ganzhorn staff and Capital City Hospice staff for helping Janet pass without pain in her last week. Their attentiveness is so appreciated. Special thanks also goes to Chaplin Jen who sat for hours at her bedside. Janet truly “went to sleep on earth and woke up in glory” as the song goes!
