John R. Murphy

It is with deep sadness we share that John Richard Murphy passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 97 years. John was born on July 7, 1929, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Porter and Elizabeth (Lightfoot) Murphy.

John served his country in the the U.S. Navy as a midshipman, and was honorably discharged in 1950. He then built a career at Big Bear and Hart’s Stores in various positions, including Manager of the Big Bear store in Graceland Shopping Center and the Hart’s Store located on Dublin-Granville Road. After retirement from Big Bear, he continued to serve his community in various part time jobs and volunteer opportunities.

He was an ardent fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, and spent many hours watching and attending games. Although an athlete himself in his school years, he preferred playing golf and spending time walking neighborhoods and trails with his wife around their homes in Indianapolis and Powell.

John was a devoted husband to Lois Jean, his wife of 70 years, loving father of Greg and Cynda (Murphy) Bernardo, proud grandfather of Crystal (Murphy) Grill, Chelsea Bernardo, and Gabriella (Bernardo) Hunt, and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Charma Murphy, his granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

John’s legacy is one built on service, integrity, and respect. His family invites those who knew him to visit at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, OH 43017 on Friday, August 28, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In John’s memory, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
