John is survived by his devoted wife, Brigette Wootton, and their children: Tyler (Hannah), sons Archer and Beau; Clayton (Kailyn) and daughter Chloe; Abby (Wayne); Olivia. He is deeply loved by his grandchildren, extended family, and a wide circle of friends whose lives he touched. John was born on September 1, 1966, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Dr. Robert Wootton (deceased) and Barbara Wootton, who survives him. He was the youngest of four siblings and was lovingly known as “Johnny” or “Baby John” growing up with his three brothers, Mark, Steve, Dave, and his sister, Kathy (deceased).
John’s faith journey began early in life when he became renowned for his exceptional abilities in Bible quiz. He memorized entire chapters of the Bible in under an hour and held the record for the most points scored in Bible Quiz for 11 years. His love for the Word continued as he wrote Bible Quiz questions that impacted the lives of many young people.
It was at his first pastorate, Trinity Assembly of God in Columbus, where his brother, Mark, served as youth pastor, that John met Brigette. They attended a church camp banquet together, which initiated their lifelong connection. Though they briefly dated in college, after graduation, God led him to propose to her, even though she was dating someone else at the time. This prompting was confirmed by a dream John’s father had the same night. She said yes, and with that, embraced her future with John. After they married, they joined Bethel Christian Assembly of God in Parma, Ohio, where John served as the youth pastor/ associate pastor. At the age of 31, John was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. His victory over cancer 27 years ago was a testament to his strength, faith, and resilience. John’s recovery was nothing short of a miracle, and he often spoke of his healing as a reminder of God's faithfulness.
John’s ministry continued to flourish as he served as Brother Crabtree’s assistant for the Ohio Ministry Network, then went on to become the Men’s Director, the Secretary, and ultimately the Network Superintendent, a position he held from 2008 until his passing. His leadership, devotion, and deep commitment to God and His people helped shape the Ohio Ministry Network, and his legacy is felt throughout the church community.
Known for his integrity, honesty, and personal investment in others, John lived a life that exemplified his strong faith. One of his passions was serving on the board for Valley Forge University, Heartbeat International, Southeastern University, and Emerge Ministries. John also enjoyed serving on several committees for the National Office of the Assemblies of God. In 2017 John added the title author to his many accomplishments, when he wrote the book Messaging: Why Audience Matters.
John also pursued his education with devotion, earning his undergraduate degree from Evangel University (Class of 1988) and completing his Master’s degree from Southeastern University in 2021. At the time of his passing, he was in the final year of his Doctorate in Ministry at Regent University, a testament to his lifelong desire to grow and serve God’s kingdom.
