She was born on May 4th, 1942 to Morris and Frances Offiler in Providence, RI. Her father owned an operated his own lace machine repair shop, which led to him traveling the world as he built his business. After graduating from high school and the University of Rhode Island, Judy started working as an elementary school teacher in Newport, RI. While there, she was set up on a blind date with a young Naval officer attending destroyer school. Six months after that blind date, they were married and spent 54 years building a family and life together.
While Norm was at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA they welcomed their daughter Holly, and four years later their son Cory to the family. During his Navy career, they lived in Norfolk, Virginia, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Annapolis, Maryland. After he retired, they lived in Manassas, VA, Thornbury, England, Marinette, WI, Annapolis, MD and finally Westerville, OH. Judy was able to watch her children build their own families, and she greeted grandchildren and great-grandchildren into the family before she left this world.
Judy had a love of travel, partly inspired by her father’s frequent travels around the world. She had a special love of Europe, and she ensured that her children and grandchildren had an opportunity to experience the life-changing experience of world travel. She often required only companionship from them, as she paid for the vast majority of the trips herself. She took them to England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Her children and grandchildren will always be thankful for sparking the joy of travel in them.
She is survived by her two brothers Wayne Offiler of Warwick, RI, Stephen Offiler and wife Karen Wall of Sterling, CT. Additionally, she leaves behind a daughter Holly Shackelton Mackey and son-in-law Paul Fairless Mackey, both VA Nurses in Columbus, OH, a son Major Cory Matthew Shackelton, USMC (ret) and daughter-in-law CDR Shellee Ann Morris, USN (ret) both of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
