Patricia “Pat” Eleanor Schlegel Barton, age 87, of Dublin, Ohio, passed away after a short illness on August 22, 2023. She was born on January 13, 1936 in Danville, Pennsylvania to the late James Lamar and Erma Eleanor Siglin Schlegel. She attended Shamokin High School in Shamokin, Pennsylvania and continued on with her education in nursing school in Elyria, Ohio.
Pat raised her family in Elyria, OH. During her years there, she was a strong supporter of programs for underprivileged youth including the Boy's and Girl's Club, Elyria Little League, and Elyria West Booster Club. She fostered abused and neglected kids in the West Elyria community. Pat always championed the underdog.
Following the death of her beloved husband and football coach, Bill Barton, she moved to Dublin, OH to be closer to her grandchildren. In Dublin, she was an avid supporter of Dublin sports and could be seen around the city having coffee, shopping or having lunch. She was always “out and about” as she would say. She had several passions in life and was a strong supporter of the underprivileged and disadvantaged. She provided assistance to folks in unfortunate circumstances with her time, resources and advocacy. She made friends easily and was known for her spirit, charm, wit and compassion for others. She never met a stranger she would say. Wherever she went, whether to Brueggers for a bagel and coffee, or to Max and Erma’s or the Dublin Village Tavern for lunch, the people there would know her. Her friends will dearly miss her.
But by far the one thing that gave her the most pride was her family. Pat was the center of her entire family. She was known as just Mom to her children and Grandma Patsy to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They gave her her greatest happiness. She would call her great-grandsons, Jack and Ben, her “special guys”, and loved spending time with them. Whether it was at one of their many sporting events or one of the many vacations we took ,you could see her love and devotion to them. And when her other two great-grandsons came along, Lucas and Henry, she was “over the moon.”
There was a favorite poem of hers that we found in a box under her bed after her passing. She instructed us to include in her obituary this which summed up her life and passing;
“When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me. I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long. And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all will take. And each must go alone. It’s all part of a master plan. A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart. Go to the friends you know. Laugh at all we used to do. Miss me, but let me go.” —Christina Georgina Rossetti
Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will sadly miss her.
She is survived by three children Kathi Kaiser of Atlanta, Georgia, Christopher Winters of Westlake, Ohio and Daniel (Betsy) Wisneski of Dublin, Ohio; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, six nieces and nephews; eleven great nieces and nephews; a sister and a brother.
Pat is preceded in death by her husband Bill; parents James and Erma and brother H. James.
A private family graveside service will be held in Elyria. A celebration of life will be held in the fall.
