Ruth Hungler

Born in Cincinnati, Ruth was the youngest of three sisters. She attended Western Hills High School and received a BA in Education from the University of Cincinnati. Meeting her true love on a blind date in college, she married her husband of 61 years, Ralph Hungler, in 1960. They welcomed four children to their family: Craig (Kathy) Hungler, Steve (Christine) Hungler, Mindy (Scott) Bailey, and Jenny (Tom) Woodford.

One of Ruth’s greatest achievements, second only to her family, was the founding of Montessori Children’s House. Ruth founded the school with two colleagues in 1977. True trailblazers in Columbus, they started a Montessori preschool when the method of education was relatively new to the central Ohio area. They had the courage to start a female-only owned school, and they built a legacy that continues today under the ownership of her daughter, Jenny, and the family’s lifelong friend, Susie Glenn. Montessori Children’s House is currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

Ruth’s life was spent sharing her love and kindness with others. Everyone who met Ruth was moved by her concern for others – both children and adults. Even in the memory care facility, she would always ask her caregivers if they needed anything to eat or drink, and thank them for each thing they did. It was classic Ruth, as she always very gracious and wanted everyone else to feel welcomed and loved. Her concern for her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, as well as her teachers and friends, was unprecedented.

Ruth had a great love of music and was involved in many choirs over the years. She and Ralph served in the St. Andrew church choir for many years and built many friendships there. She also enjoyed playing the piano, both at home for her family, and at school for her students.

An avid reader, Ruth had a desire to write books of her own. After she moved into memory care, her children self-published the children’s book she authored in the 1980’s, titled “Ella’s Gift”. She also spent many of her retirement years writing a novel entitled “Steel Bonds”, which has yet to be published.

Ruth’s happiest days were spent “visiting” and laughing with her family and friends. These times were her greatest treasure. Ruth was an inspiration to all, as she taught her family the importance of integrity, hard work, and commitment. She worked full-time while raising her family, volunteering in various capacities, and always making time for everyone in her life. She never took anything for granted, and she was truly grateful for all the blessings in her life. She always said she didn’t know how she got so lucky, but others know it wasn’t luck, but the result of her commitment and love for others.

Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph, her sisters, her parents, and many other family and friends.

Ruth’s life and legacy will be celebrated in a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday September 19, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church, 4475 Dublin Road Hilliard Ohio 43026.
