She was born in Huntington, Indiana, in 1945 to James and Virgina Wertenberger. Sally attended Ball State University and was a proud alumnus. She started her career writing for a newspaper in South Bend, Indiana, before moving to Decatur, Illinois, where she spent many years as a volunteer and English teacher before opening her own writing consulting company, Tyler Types, helping hospitals, non-profits and corporations secure major philanthropic gifts, donations and grants to support Cancer Research and Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation programming. During her time in Chicago, Illinois, she continued this focus, working for Northwestern Hospital, National Alzheimer’s Association, and Roosevelt University. After relocating to Columbus in the early 2000s, she worked as the Director of Development at The Columbus Art Museum, CAPA and Catco before retiring. She was a writer, teacher, author, philanthropist and a supporter of the fine arts.
Sally was preceded in death by her mother and father, James and Virginia Wertenberger of Huntington, Indiana, and is survived by her brother, Jack Wertenberger and his wife Pam, who also reside in Huntington, with their sons and grandchildren. Sally has two children, Amy Reinoehl (Tyler) and James Tyler. Amy lives in Powell, Ohio, with her husband Jack Reinoehl and their four children: Anneliese, a Senior at Miami University; Preston, a Junior at Ohio University; Matthew, a Sophomore at The Ohio State University and Grace, a Freshman at The Ohio State University. James Tyler lives in Oregon.
Friends of all ages often referred to her as “Nana” and loved to greet her as such. She was an avid reader and always had a “new” favorite book she was reading from the Columbus Library. She had many dear friends from her old neighborhood in Powell, as well as her residence at The Bristol Senior Living in Worthington, Ohio. During her time at the Bristol, she loved to walk laps around the building (18 to be exact per day), deliver daily newspapers to her neighbors and just check in on friends at the facility, always bringing a smile to everyone around her. We will forever miss her magical Fairy Gardens, hand-written cursive notes, Flamingo decor and her endearing love for her grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed in honor of Sally Tyler at the Pelotonia Foundation, to help continue the fight against cancer.
A funeral for Sally will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, OH 43017, followed by a visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
