

Walter Denny Burnside, age 79, of Dublin, Ohio left this world and entered heaven to be with Jesus on April 18th, 2022. He fought several battles with various cancers for the past 5 years. Denny was born in Youngstown, Ohio to Walter D. and Hope Burnside and moved from Niles, Ohio to Columbus, Ohio to attend the Ohio State University.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-Law, and brother-in-law. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria Jean Burnside and their children, Lori Godard (Blake), Kimberly Pizzuti (Scott), and Jeff Burnside (April) and five grandchildren, Sierra and Riley Godard, Nick and Lexi Pizzuti, and Alyssa Burnside, his sister/brother-in-law Bonnie & Mike Pusbach (Amber, Allison & Andrew), Brother/sister-in-law Barry & Kathy Burnside (Barry II), sisters-in-law Shirley and Marlene Hare, and many friends.
Denny graduated from The Ohio State University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. In 1972, he earned a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering at which time he joined the Electro Science Laboratory as a research scientist. In 1980, he became an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and a full Professor in 1985. In 1985, he became the Director of the Electro Science Laboratory and remained in that position until retiring from OSU in 2002. While at OSU, he won many awards from the university, IEEE and AMTA. He also won the Distinguished Public Service Award from NASA which is the highest form of recognition for a non-government employee. In addition, he was named Emeritus Professor which he still held. In 2010, he founded NeWave Sensor Solutions, an RFID innovation small business. While working at OSU he and Robert Burkholder created a novel RFID antenna, which they patented and formed the basis of NSS. Most importantly, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather “papa”, brother, and friend.
Funeral will be held at Schoedinger Funeral Home (5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin OH 43017) on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022. Services will be held at 1pm with visitation to follow from 2-5pm.
