

Donald graduated from Duluth Central High School. After high school he attended F. I. Salter School preparing to study marine architecture. He joined the Naval Reserve April 13, 1939 where he served on the USS Paducah. He was then activated to the regular Navy service on November 1, 1940 during World War II. He served as a chief gunner’s mate aboard the USS Wasp, earning a bronze star while in the South Pacific in April of 1945. He was honorably discharged September 25, 1945.
After returning from his military service, Don married Adeline M. Carlson on October 19, 1945. Together they raised their four sons in Duluth. Don was an architect who was a partner in various architectural firms over the years, the last being Stanius Johnson Architects where he worked alongside two of his sons, Ron and Rick. When not working, Don loved to hunt, fish, fly private aircraft, snowmobile, golf and shooting trap. He was still shooting trap at age 92 with his brother-in-law John Breen! Don and Adeline wintered in Sarasota, Florida for many years.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Adeline; and infant son, Daniel.
He is survived by his four sons: Ron (Nancy), Rick (Linda), Larry (LuAnn) and Randy (Debbie); nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Donna Mae Breen; extended family and friends.
A special "thank you" to the staff at Edgewood Vista for the care given to Don during his stay.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service, Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in Concordia Lutheran Church, 2501 Woodland Ave., Duluth, with the Rev. Loren Anderson-Bauer officiating. Inurnment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Duluth Honor Guard, 55 Riverside Drive, Duluth, MN 55808.
