Doris Ruth Lane
June 29, 1931 – December 1, 2018
Doris Ruth Lane, 87, of Duluth passed away December 1, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was born in Duluth, MN on June 29, 1931 to Fred and Ruth Milfaith of Kelsey, MN.
Doris graduated from Cotton High School in 1949 as Valedictorian of her class. She attended Duluth Business School and worked for New York Life Insurance Company.
She met the love of her life, Donald Lane, through friends and cousins. They were married on September 20, 1952 in Cotton Community Church. Together they raised three children and Doris was a stay at home mom in their early years. She worked several jobs as she re –entered the work force, but found her career in the Duluth Public School System as a school secretary. She enjoyed working in several of the elementary schools until her retirement in 1986. Throughout their marriage Doris and Don worked hard making a good life for their family. They built a cabin together on Comstock Lake that the family enjoys to this day. They did everything together and were completely devoted to each other. After retiring, they enjoyed traveling together and spending time at the lake, and socializing as active members of the West Duluth American Legion. In the last decade, Doris particularly enjoyed a renewed relationship with her many cousins on the Preston side, attending several reunions in Cotton.
Doris will be remembered for her loving kindness toward others and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family extends their appreciation to Dr. Craig Gilbertson, Ecumen Lakeshore Rehab, and the wonderful staff and residents at Primrose Assisted Living, where she truly felt at home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; dear husband, Donald; and brother, Edgar Milfaith.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Lori (Tom) Hicks of Saginaw, Luanne (Kevin) McMillan of Duluth, and Daniel Lane of Duluth; grandchildren, David (Kassandra) Hicks, Stephen (Brittany Fisher) Hicks, Kyle McMillan, and Samantha (Alex) Youngren; great-grandchildren, Lane, Oliver, Hattie, Maisie, and Tillie; sisters, Rebecca (Donald) Simpson, and Marian (Jeff Braun) James; sister-in-law, Marianna Milfaith; cousins; nieces; nephews; and Kathy Wolter, near and dear to her heart.

Doris Ruth Lane

Doris was the most kind and loving person I’ve ever taken care of. I was blessed to have spent a few years with her.
If anyone were to be having a bad day Doris would say “what’s the matter, honey? You should be smiling.” Starting my morning by seeing her beautiful smile and hearing her sweet voice was the reason I had such a wonderful day. I’d always walk into the room and say “guess who” and before even seeing my face she would reply “that sounds like my sweet jessie, am I right?” Every night after tucking her in and saying goodnight I’d be half way out the door and she would say “I love you.”
I am going to miss that beautiful lady so much and I’m going to miss her love she gave to me and everyone else. May she Rest In Peace.

Your Mother was my best friend all through school. I have lots of fond memories. I am sorry I couldn't get to the funeral. God Bless,

What a wonderful lady. I remember when she worked at Irving school. And when we became friends in highschool, she was so welcoming to me. Your family was truly blessed by her.
