

She was born to Gilbert and Emma Kortgard on May 19, 1919 and raised on the farm, along with three sisters and one brother in Sacred Heart, Minn., until she married Clarence M. Norland on December 28, 1940. They started married life in the grocery business at Princeton and Randall, MN until they moved to Duluth in 1942. At that time, Clarence took employment at the Barnes Shipyard and later for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroad in Duluth. Hazel and Clarence raised two sons, Ralph and Paul . Hazel worked for the Minnesota Department of Economic Security for 26 years and retired in 1982. Hazel was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, Nortun Ladies, Lakeside AARP, Ladies of the Elks, Golden Arrow, Burlington Northern Veterans, the American Legion and the VFW.
She has now joined her lifelong dancing partner, and beloved husband Clarence for an eternity of great dances.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents; and two sisters, Ethyl and Irene.
She is survived by her two sons, Ralph (Marilyn) Norland of Duluth and Paul (Kim) Norland of Roswell, GA; four grandchildren, Kari (Shawn) Pederson of Blaine, MN, Kami Norland (Paul Broman) of Duluth, MN, Tasha Norland and Taylor Norland of Roswell, GA; one great-grandchild, Toren Pederson of Blaine, MN; one sister, Ruth Peterson of Mound, MN and one brother, Marvin Kortgard of Starbuck, MN.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 12 from 6 -8 p.m. at the Jarvi Dowd Funeral Home, 925 E. 4th Street. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 pm Friday, Jarnuary 13 at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior Street with visitation one hour prior at the church. Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, the Union Gospel Mission or the Northern Lakes Food Bank.
