Jane was born in Duluth on January 12, 1921, along with her identical twin sister Jean, to Lee and Blanche Durkee.
She grew up in Duluth, graduated from Central High School and attended Duluth State Teacher’s College, where she met and fell in love with Wayne Keto.
She and Wayne married and spent their early years together in small towns throughout Minnesota, wherever Wayne’s coaching career took them. That career culminated in his leading the Gilbert Buccaneers to the State Basketball Championship in 1951. They then settled in Duluth, where they raised their family.
Jane was one of the very first Head Start teachers, and later took special joy in providing a loving foster home for young children. She then joined the administrative staff at UMD, retiring as Executive Secretary in the College of Education.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; brother, Robert Durkee ; sister, Mary Helen Durkee and nephew, Robert Mills.
Jane is survived by her loving twin sister, Jean (Don) Mills; her son, Stephen (Mary) Keto, Raleigh, NC; daughters, Cynthia (Dennis) Neibaur and Anne Church, of Idaho; six grandchildren, three great-granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.
A Gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:30 until the 1:00 pm Memorial Service Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 in Jarvi Dowd Chapel. 925 East 4th Street. Inurnment will be next to her husband in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wayne Keto Memorial at the Athletic Department at UMD.
