

She was born Marion Jean Springer to Rose Schmidt and Vince Springer in Superior, WI on February 13, 1923. When five years old, she moved with her mother and her sister, Betty, to Duluth where she eventually graduated from Duluth Central. After high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for a couple of years and then as a Miller Hospital employee. During WWII she met her future husband, Jack Burns, a US Coast Guardsman and Detroit native, at a park near the Coast Guard Station on Park Point. Married at Sacred Heart Cathedral, April 15, 1944, Marion and Jack then served the Coast Guard for a time on Outer Island as lighthouse tenders before returning to Duluth and later Coleraine to raise a family. Jack died in 1984.
Marion is survived by her sons, Patrick (Richard), of Arizona, and Kevin (Debbie) of Maple Grove, MN, grandson, Aaron Burns of Champlin, MN, and by her granddaughter, Katie Nedelcu (Radu) along with great-grandson, Daniel Nedelcu, of Bucharest, Romania. Additionally, she is survived by nieces and a nephew in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Visitation: 12:00 noon until the 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service Monday, August 15, 2016 at Bell Brothers Funeral Home, 601 N. 56th Avenue W., Duluth. Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery.
