Mary Terese Johnson

Mary Terese Johnson, age 88, one month shy of her 89th birthday, passed peacefully on May 23, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, MN. Mary was born June 23, 1929 to Martin & Mary Yurisich; she was the youngest of three children. She attended school locally and graduated from UMD with her Masters in Speech Pathology. Mary was employed with the Duluth Area School District for many years. She was a Past President of University for Seniors at UMD.

Some of her many interests included: golfing, shopping, attending art fairs with her daughters, and crossword puzzles. Mary also enjoyed traveling to Italy and Croatia. Springtime, with its beautiful shades of green, was her favorite time of year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; parents; siblings, Frank and Joseph Yurisich; and niece, Collette Swan.

Mary will be deeply missed by her children, Tina (Robert Walenczyk), Jill (Duane Shocinski), Blair (Michele); grandchildren, Jake & Luke Shocinski; and many relatives in Chicago and on the West Coast.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 am, with visitation one hour prior on Tuesday, May 29 at Bell Brothers Funeral Home, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., Duluth. Interment will be at Oneota Cemetery. Condolences may be left at

I was acquainted with Mary through University for Seniors and found she radiated joy twice her size! We were roommates on a US trip to New York and I'll never forget what a delightful companion she was. My prayers go out to her family, as I thank God for her life. Rosemary Tripp
