Richard was born July 24, 1927, to Richard and Edith Hodgson. In his long and fulfilling life, he was a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He had a deep but private devotion to God and a rich, open love for family.
He was a 1944 graduate of Denfeld High School and later of the University of Minnesota. He married Shirley McLellan on Nov. 22, 1951. After earning his MBA at Indiana University, he taught at the University of Missouri before settling near Chicago to raise their family while he pursued a career with the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, Corp. He and Shirley retired to the beauty of Hazelhurst, WI, before finally returning to their first home, Duluth, where both found great happiness reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and enjoying their lovely view of Lake Superior.
Although Shirley's recent death truly broke Richard’s heart, he bravely carried on, getting up at 4:40 am to use the gym facilities. He had recently finished writing a book about railroad and locomotives, which were his passion as well as his career. He also enjoyed classical music, reading the newspaper cover to cover each day, cats (especially his dear Lucy) and dogs. Richard was a man of genuine integrity and strong convictions. We will especially miss keeping current with him about his grandchildren’s lives and the events of the day.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley and his sister, Frances.
He is survived by son David (Janeice DeLisle) Hodgson; daughter Elizabeth (Kevin) Carey; grandchildren, Honoré and Prosper Hodgson, Adrienne, Steven, Emily, and Michael Carey; and twin sister Margaret.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
