

Robert was born in Duluth on August 29, 1921 to James and Helen (Boortz) Hirsch. He attended and graduated from Central High School in 1939 and went on to study for a couple of years at the State Teachers College. Later Robert enlisted in the Army during World War ll and served honorably in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon.
After his service he moved back to Duluth and married Beverly Jean Berg on September 24, 1949. "Dewey" worked as a roofer for several area companies. Later he purchased and operated a number of dry cleaning businesses before returning to roofing and retiring in 1983. "Dewey" belonged to the Roofers Local 73 and was a member of the Friends of the NRA. He volunteered at the local food shelf and earlier in life coached Little League. "Dewey" enjoyed spending time at the deer shack near the Whiteface Reservoir as well as fishing on Lake Superior and the Pigeon River. He loved visiting with family and friends especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a kind, hardworking, honest man. He will be deeply missed.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his parents and brother, James “Buddy.”
He is survived by one daughter, Priscilla (George) McLaughlin; three sons, Jim (Mary Ann) Hirsch, Tom Hirsch both of Duluth, Robert (Teresa) Hirsch of Makinen, MN; six grandchildren, Megan, Alyssa, TJ, Derek, Kyle and Morgan; brother, Gerald Hirsch of St. Paul; sister, Darlene Manley of Deerfield Beach, FL; brother-in-law, Tom (Brenda) Olsen of Genova, NV as well as many other family members and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Benedictine Health Center and St. Mary’s 3 East for all of their wonderful care.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Bell Brothers Funeral Home 601 N. 56th Ave. W. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery.
