Born in London, England, Bridget Dickens passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord on January 24 at Oyster Harbour Seniors Community in Ladysmith, BC. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Blake Dickens, parents Rev. George F. Trench and Muriel Trench, and older sister Leonore "Buz" (Dr. Denis) Powell. She is survived by her son, Mark (Ruth) and daughter Lynn, as well as grandchildren Jeremy (Erica), Daniel, Yaqub and Talitha, and nieces, nephews and cousins. Bridget had a lifelong love of the outdoors and was fond of walking, hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing and skiing (downhill and cross-country); in her younger years she was also active in mountaineering. Growing up in England, she trained as an Occupational Therapist before coming to Canada in 1957, where she worked for the Workman’s Compensation Board in Vancouver. Bridget met Blake while mountaineering near Lake O’Hara in 1958; they were married in Chelsea Old Church, London in 1959 and settled on Vancouver Island.
After moving to the Prince George area in the early 60’s, Bridget was a full-time mother for most of the 60’s and 70’s. In addition to family and the outdoors, she was very involved in her faith community, first at St Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church and later at St. Giles’ Presbyterian Church. With a servant’s heart, she visited the sick and dying as part of the pastoral care team at the Prince George Regional Hospital. Bridget and Blake retired to Duncan in 1991, where they became involved in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and continued to enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing and camping in their VW van. Bridget will be remembered as an insightful, prayerful and gracious woman who had a deep and abiding awareness of God’s presence in both the majestic and the mundane; she was one who had her heart fixed on the Lord Jesus and her feet firmly planted in the practical world. Thanks to the staff of Oyster Harbour Seniors Community for providing her with a caring environment to live out her final years. Due to COVID, a memorial service is not planned any time before the summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a reputable charity related to the outdoors or the developing world.
