Bud McGrade (Marshall Edward McGrade) passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2024 at the Cowichan District Hospital. Bud was born in Nanaimo on November 10, 1937. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maxine McGrade, his children Danny (Wendy), Laurel (Brian), and Barry (Laurie), as well as grandchildren, Jenny, Hayley, Andrea, Shannon, Leanne, Thomas, Holly, Jennifer, Theresa and his great-grandchildren, Gavin, Alec, Maxine, Nora, Levi, Ammon, Jacob, Claire, Declan, Owen and Lochlan.
Bud will always be remembered for his strong work ethic. He worked in the logging industry as an equipment operator and truck driver. He could do any job set before him. It was an honour to be taught to do a job the “Bud McGrade way”. Bud had a love for fishing, boating and camping. The family has many fond memories of boating trips all around the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast and Campbell River area, as well as camping in Port Renfrew. In retirement, Bud and Maxine spent many winters in Yuma, making many wonderful friendships along the way.
Bud’s mother died when he was born, and due to family circumstances, he was given up for adoption. His given name was Emil Gomerich, but it was later changed to Marshall Edward McGrade by his adoptive family. When Bud was an adult, he was reunited with his birth family. He is survived by his sisters, Mary and Claire, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Sunridge Place for their kindness and generosity towards Bud during his time there.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 – 4pm on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Sahtlam Fire Hall, 4384 Cowichan Lake Road, Duncan, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bud’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
