October 15, 1937 – March 8, 2015
Born in Preston, England. Mike passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with COPD at his home in Duncan, surrounded by his family.
Mike leaves behind Sheila, his soul mate of 30 years and his children Dawn, Jan, Barb and Jamie. “Poppa” is also survived by eight grandchildren – Adam, Georgia, Grant, Cara, Michael, Lorne, Helena & Christina. He also leaves behind his sister Margie in addition to many nieces & nephews in Canada and the UK.
After leaving school, Mike enlisted with the Elite Scots Guards of Buckingham Palace and travelled the world with the Army reaching the rank of Sergeant and Physical Trainer. After leaving the military he returned to his home town and enlisted as a Police Constable (Bobby) where he served for many years.
Mike emigrated to Canada in the early 1960’s and he worked in various professions before moving to the Cowichan Valley where he spent the remainder of his career as a cement finisher and was well known for his expertise, work ethic and sense of humor.
Of all his many & varied hobbies, fishing was his greatest passion. As an avid fisherman of rivers, lakes and both Atlantic & Pacific Coasts many of his favorite times were spent out on the water. He spent many enjoyable hours on the river with his young grandsons Mike & Lorne and later in life on the Ocean with Jan & Jamie. Other hobbies included gardening, crafts, nature watching, woodworking and home mechanics. He was very creative and there was literally nothing he could not fix.
As his illness progressed, he and Sheila spent many happy hours quietly sitting together at Cowichan Bay observing the various fish boats, eagles and other wildlife. He loved animals.
Even though he was too unwell to travel, he always hoped he would one day be able to fish the Kitimat River again. May you Fish Forever Mike!
An informal Celebration of Life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Services on March 13th, 2015 at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend and share their memories & stories of Mike. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Mike’s memory to the SPCA.
