January 23, 1939 – March 3, 2013
Born within the sound of Bow-Bells in London, Joy enjoyed a happy childhood with her evacuated family in Penwartha, Cornwall. As a young woman, she trained to become a Registered Nurse and a Mid-wife, subsequently working in Chichester and London (UK), Sydney (NSW Australia) and lastly on Vancouver Island; in Chemainus, Duncan and Victoria. Among her professional colleagues, Joy was not only well liked but well respected as a warm friend and empathetic and perceptive nurse. After coping with severe Parkinsonism and Dementia for more than 15 years, Joy - known to her family and close friends as -“Joy-Bells”- just managed to reach her 74th birthday and 49 years of a happy marriage.
Prior to the relentless advancement of her physical and mental afflictions, she followed a vigorously active life which included regular aerobic, golf and tennis outings.
Joy is survived by her husband John; daughter Fiona (Nando), son Graeme (Joanne) together with seven grandsons Remo, Darien, Aiden, Aaron, Declan, Colby and Ashton. In her last years, Joy was cared for by the staff at Sunridge Place in Duncan. Accordingly, the family wishes to especially thank those regular and casual members past and present of Dahlia\Daffodil Houses who tended to her needs in what rapidly became for her, a totally helpless situation. Thanks also go out to the Wilson Team of doctors, Lisa and Jean-Marie, for their help during Joy’s long struggle. Although Joy lived most of her life apart from her birth family, there has always been mutual love and loyalty among them and their spouses. Her passing will sadden them deeply. For me, as her husband, I am proud of Joy and the bond and regard her children (Fiona and Graeme) have for her, and
Not a day will end with the fading light, that I have not loved and cherished you
my Joy-Bells….. Goodnight!
A Celebration of Joy’s Life will be held on Thursday March 14th at 2:30 PM, at First Memorial Funeral Services, 375 Brae Road, Duncan with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate may do so in Joy’s name to the Parkinson Society of BC.
