David Harold Collum

David was born in Odessa TX on January 5, 1958. He passed away on May 5, 2019 as the result of a crash of a private plane near Santa Rosa, NM. David was preceded in death by his father, James Harold Collum, who died before David was born. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Deeann Collum, his son Wesley Thomas Taylor (Linda Owen), and his daughter, Sarah Louise Collum. He is also survived by his Mother, Betty David who is 91, as well as brother Jimmy Collum (Linda Collum), sisters Susie Collum, Shirley Collum, Karen David, and brother Bill David (Shira David) all in Odessa TX and multiple nieces and nephews. He is mourned by Kim’s parents, Glenda & Chuck Payne as well as her brother, Kenneth Payne and many friends.

David deeply loved his wife Kimberly and his children Sarah and Wesley. He loved spending time with them and with his birth family in Odessa. David’s favorite pastimes included woodworking and cooking: he learned to cook from his mother, Betty, who was the long-time proprietor of a family-owned café in Odessa. He loved to barbeque and to bake—and enjoyed cooking Thanksgiving dinner for everyone.

David graduated high school in Odessa and attended college there. Since 2002, he worked for Chaparral Machinery with computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines, doing installations and operational instruction as well as maintenance. He was traveling to Los Alamos, NM for a job when the accident occurred.

David was fortunate to travel to Japan and Israel for training on various machines, and loved talking about those trips. He was a scuba diver prior to his marriage, and loved Hawaii and Cayman.

David and Kim married October 6, 1990 and lived in Arlington TX and then in Duncanville TX. David loved being home and sharing time with his family, including his dogs. He was an awesome husband and Dad, and will be greatly missed. It is so hard to lose someone this loved in an instant.

Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. The Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2019. There will be a reception to follow at the funeral home.

I feel fortunate to have known David, and unfortunate to not have been able to spend more time with him. I always looked forward to seeing David and Kim during my visits from Washington. He was so kind and giving, and made me feel welcome. I am so thankful that I was able to see him during my visit in April. Didn’t get a chance to enjoy his cooking on the last trip. Boy, could he cook! Best barbecue brisket ever! My heart aches that we lost you way too soon. We will miss you. Much love to you and yours.

I've only known David for a few years, but for the precious time we've known each other, he made me feel welcome into your home Kim, and to the family. I've known David since even before meeting him. One of my first dates with Ken, he brought a slice of David's chocolate pie to have for dessert when he was living with Bill. Never tasted anything as wonderful before. Ask Ken. But don't tell Ken that the only reason I've continued dating him was because I wanted more of David's chocolate pies! Just kidding. ;-)....At my first thanksgiving, David was sweet and kind to me, telling me stories and just talking to me. He really helped put me at ease. I pride myself of knowing a lot of motion pictures (I'm a closeted movie critic), but I may have found my match with David....I will miss him, and the part he's played in my own life's movie.

David was my best friend, my life, my soulmate and my husband. I can't even begin to describe how much he meant to me. We loved spending time together even if it was just watching TV! I know that he meant a lot to a lot of people and how special he was. When we started dating, I had a 4 year old son and he didn't run, like some others would have. When we were married, he considered and always has Wesley his son also. His daughter,Sarah, was his greatest joy. She looks like like her daddy and his brother and sisters. He had lots of friends and would do anything for you just because. He had the biggest heart of anyone I know. I love you more than I could ever Express and I will until we see each other again.

Working with David over the past 15 plus years was a wonderful experience. He was always willing to share his knowledge and insight to the job at hand. David will be missed by many in the industry as well as everyone that knew him. I will never forget you my friend. May God find a special place for you in His Kingdom.

David and I were co workers at Yamazen Inc. in the late 1990's and friends in the industry after our careers took different paths. David's sense of humor and gift of teaching were apparent to everyone. When it came to trivia, David had no competition. And in the industry had no enemies. His love for Family, Food, Travel, Friends, the Machine Tool Industry, and teaching the young and old will be his legacy. Rest in Peace my friend.

David visited our machine shop many times over the years and as a young machinist I looked forward to every time he arrived. It seemed like he could solve any problem! He was always willing to share his incredible knowledge and experiences with me and the rest of the team. He taught me quite a lot from all the times I got to interact with him. David was such a kind and intelligent man. I am thankful for the privilege to get to work with him and will miss him greatly.
