Mrs. Magdalene Bennett Wood of 194 Wood Road in Dunn went home to her reward on Thursday, November 7th, 2019 being 96 years of age. She was born on January 8th, 1923 the daughter of the late James Robert Bennett and Lula Wade Bennett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Clifford Wood; a son: James Clifford Wood Jr. and a granddaughter: Donna Gail Wood.
Mrs. Magdalene is remembered by her family as being a loving, kind, family-oriented woman who stood ready to teach and guide those she loved in the right direction. She was a hard worker; she had always taken good care of her home and those who lived in it; such as her husband and children. She loved working in the garden and taking the food she grew with her own hands and preparing a delicious spread for her family. Often that very food would be on the table for the meal that they would share together on Sunday after church. Every Sunday she could be found up early that morning, cooking the day’s meal before church; because Sunday was “her” day. She knew on Sunday, everything stopped, and the day would be spent worshipping the Lord and embracing those she loved. After church her family would come together with her; they would break bread together, share stories, have meaningful conversations and make memories that would last a lifetime. Magdalene had worked alongside her husband in the country store that they had owned for years, Woods Grocery, where she enjoyed the day to day, with the many customers who would patron with them. She was a very active member of Long Branch Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Magdalene had been a planner, she loved for her life to be in order and she put little off until tomorrow. She held strong southern values, like working hard, being a good wife and mother; and being honest and she instilled these same values in her children and later her grandchildren. Her grandson Gary can recall working in the garden with her as a boy and being rewarded for his hard work after which taught him if you work hard in this life, you will get the reward you have earned. A fruitful garden, the smell of chicken and pastry cooking or a fresh homemade biscuit on Sunday morning; those things are all warm reminders, of some of the sweetest pieces of a mother and grandmother loved by so many and will serve as tender reminders that she was here and left her print on the lives of those she loved so. As we remember Magdalene, we can rest easy knowing that she has went own to the reward in which she worked so hard to obtain in this life. The memories of a life well-lived will remain in the hearts of those beloved by her, who will now follow in the footsteps she left behind for them.
Left behind to cherish her memory are the following members of her family: Sons: Jerry Gordon Wood and wife Patricia of Dunn, Billy Wood and wife Brenda of Dunn and Donnie R. Wood and significant other Carroll of Toney, Alabama; she also leaves behind six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
