She was the daughter of the late Willie Green and Minnie Williams Byrd, and the beloved wife of 75 years to Talmadge “Bud” Gregory, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son, Talmage Jay Gregory; sisters, Edna Hargis, Callie Fish, Alice Parrish, Retha Arrington, and Rosa Byrd; and brothers, Marvin, Raeford, and Fred Byrd.
Mavor was the cherished mother of Linda Bullock (Frank), Jimmy Gregory, David Gregory (Debbie), and Bobby Gregory (Mary Lou). She was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren: Keith Matthews (Christy), Tanya Simmons (Kent), Jeremy Gregory (Jessica), Jonathan Hall (Misty), Amy Whitney (Josh), Brad Gregory (Jessica), Brent Gregory (Tara), and Justin Covert (Amanda); sixteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by one brother, Edison Byrd.
Mavor lived a life filled with boundless joy that was contagious to everyone she met. She always had a kind word or compliment for others. She loved spending time with her family, friends, dogs, and birds. One of her greatest joys was baking homemade biscuits, often for her sons when they came to visit.
When Mavor and Talmadge moved to the senior apartments near the Campbell University campus in the early 1990s, no one could have imagined that, after her beloved husband’s passing, she would become the only senior living among college students. The apartments are now used for university housing, and she would often watch the students walk by on their way to class, always ready with a comment and a smile.
Most importantly, Mavor taught us about kindness, love, and the power of warm hugs and kisses. She is now rejoicing in Heaven with her Heavenly Father, her husband Talmadge, her son Jay, and other beloved family members. We celebrate her life and look forward to the day we will be reunited with her.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the long-term caregivers and dear friends who were there for our mother: Diana McLean, Robert Boyce, Dr. Vyas, Liberty Home Care, Harnett Woods, Hospice, and the entire staff for their dedicated care and support during this time.
A special thank you to Jimmy Gregory (her oldest son) and Amy Whitney (granddaughter) for the years of unconditional love, support, and care they provided to our mom after dad's passing in 1992.
We appreciate you all so very much. Thank you for your prayers, calls, visits, and continued support. Please continue to lift our family up in prayer.
A visitation for Mavor will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Cromartie-Miller Funeral Home, 401 W Cumberland St, Dunn, North Carolina 28334. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM at the same location. Burial will take place immediately after the service at Byrd Family Cemetery.
